Friedman, Richard A. "Lasting Pleasures, Robbed by Drug Abuse." The New York Times. 30 Aug. 2010. Web. 28 Sept. 2010.
This article from The New York Times discusses the reasons people become addicted to drugs. Then, the side effects that people experience. It tells the story of a man addicted to cocaine and why he couldn't stop using it even after it stopped giving him a high.
This article related to Brave New World because the drug use described is similar to the use of soma in the book. People use soma to escape any negative emotions just like the man in the article used cocaine to get that high feeling. After time, using a drug becomes a habit and people do it without even thinking which is what most of the people in Brave New World experience with soma-use.
This article talk about three main break troughs in recent gene therapy study. It discusses the treatment of two children with ALD using recent genetic discoveries. Other successes have happened recently as well. These victories help the science keep moving forward and keep people hopeful that one day we will have cures for more deadly illnesses.
This article relates to Brave New World because the scientists in this book are masters at gene therapy. They know exactly how to create an embryo so that the child will turn out precisely how they want it to. Is this the direction our society is headed?
Hoeffel, John. "Medical Marijuana Poll: Most L.A. Voters Support Dispensaries." La Times. 22 Oct. 2009. Web. 9 Oct. 2010.
This article shows the growing acceptance of marijuana and legalizing it. 74% of voters support Los Angeles County's medical marijuana law while 54% want to see it legalized. Drug use is becoming a bigger part of our everyday lives.
This article shows how our society could be moving towards the society in Brave New World. In that world, drug use is completely acceptable and even encouraged by the government to get rid of your problems.
Adams, Jill U. "Screening Can Identify High-risk Genes in Eggs." La Times. 4 Oct. 2010. Web. 9 Oct. 2010.
This article explains how embryos created using invitro fertilization techniques can be screened for genetic variants before they are implanted in a woman's uterus. This way doctors can remove variants in BRCA genes known to cause breast cancer. There are however, some ethical issues with processes such as this one.
Brave New World uses the same basic ideas for creating embryos. They can make sure no children will have genes for any diseases or mutations. This is a completely normal and natural thing for their society while it is still new and controversial in ours.
Morton, Emma. "Stem Jab 'cures MS'" The Sun. 30 Jan. 2009. Web. 9 Oct. 2010.
This article discusses how cells from MS sufferers own bone marrow can produce amazing results. Three years after this experiment, 17 of the 21 subjects showed improvement and brain damage had been halted in four. "It seems to prevent neurological progression and reverse disability." Dr Doug Brown, Research Manager at the MS Society, said: "It's exciting that not only is progression of disability halted, but damage appears to be reversed." Research like this is highly controversial because cells are often taken from unborn babies.
This relates to Brave New World because scientists in that society were already far beyond this point. They had already perfected all of these things we are only just beginning to understand. They could control every aspect of a child's life just by their genetic makeup or by conditioning.
